CHAPTER TEN

Gaius 6 was little more than a large rock floating in the inky darkness of deep space. Artificial light was dim and Avon had found it difficult to land Miranda without damaging it. But with the Swan computer’s guidance, he managed to.

‘I can tell you are unimpressed,’ Collon said apologetically, ‘but for some hours every day we receive light and warmth from the two suns of Aegisthus. They should appear anytime soon.’ He smiled.

‘Where are the other members of your clan?’ Avon asked.

‘Moving around in the dark can be hazardous, so they won’t appear just yet and we would be wise to remain on board until first light.’

‘You have refuelling facilities here?’

‘But of course. I’ve built up a store of the crystals provided by Pearl,’ he frowned. ‘I expect he’ll pay us a visit before long.’

‘Why would he do that?’

Collon seemed embarrassed. ‘Well, to tell the truth, I am in debt to Pearl and behind in my repayments of those debts.’

‘I take it Pearl is not a patient man?’

Collon sighed. ‘You could say that. In fact, you just did. You are right, of course. I am much beholden to him as a peripheral member of his group.’

‘And you are hoping that my gold will let you off the hook?’

Collon smiled slyly. ‘There is that – and the chance to advance myself. There are many warlords in the Beyond and I fancy becoming one of them. Your gold will buy weapons, a more up-to-date aircraft and the loyalty of any mercenaries I care to recruit.’

‘It’s a spacecraft,’ Avon said.

‘That’s what I meant. So, where is this gold you have promised me?’

‘I don’t really know.’

Collon looked astonished. ‘You lied to me?’ he spluttered.

‘You could say that, but you would be wrong. In order to discover the whereabouts of the gold and rare jewels – I may not have mentioned those – I need to retrieve a small, advanced computer that answers only to me,’ he smiled. ‘I like to control computer technology, rather than becoming its slave.’

‘So where is this computer?’

‘It is hidden close by where you captured me,’ he shrugged. ‘I really should have mentioned it before, but we left in something of a hurry, didn’t we?’

Collon looked aghast. ‘You mean, we have to go back and get it?

‘I’m afraid so.’

‘But that’s impossible.’

‘Nothing is impossible.’

‘I might just as well hand you over to Servalan and be done with you.’

‘I thought you had decided that my offer was a good deal better than hers?’ Avon looked at Collon with a curious expression. ‘By the way,’ he said innocently, ‘how are you meant to contact her and collect your reward? Not that, as I’ve already mentioned, she’s going to part with a single credit.’

The sky outside began to lighten. A similar dawning crossed Collon’s features. ‘I think I understand,’ he said. ‘She wants you alive so that she can force you to tell her where this computer is.’ He assumed a grim expression. ‘I am adept at torture,’ he continued, ‘and I could make life very unpleasant for you until you talked.
